Yesterday, we tested the IK Multimedia
iRig Pre HD mobile mic preamp on an iOS device, the iPad Air. They didn't give us the cable to connect to an Android device, that is, a Micro USB or USB 3.1 cable. Therefore, we had to wait until today to do an Android test; we used a Samsung Galaxy Note 8 phone. You can listen to the test recording below.
*Correction: I got mixed up on the USB connectors. the iRig comes with a Micro-USB to USB 2.0 Type A, not Type B, cable. The iRig Pre HD seems to work well with the Note 8, and I didn't have any troubles connecting the devices and getting the direct monitoring to work. I used the equivalent iRig Recorder app for the Android. This is where the problems came in. The Android version seems to be the inferior edition of the app, as pop-up ads assaulted me on every new screen. The iOS version seemed to lock everything behind a three-to-four dollar transaction. The Android version, on the other hand, doesn't seem to offer many features at all. Compared to the iOS edition, it gives more functions initially, allowing you to save uncompressed .wav files for free. Other features, such as compression, limiting, and filters, don't seem to exist in the Android app. I don't recommend using this app, however, and it's not for the reasons stated above. iRig Recorder froze on me, needing a "Force Stop," three times over the course of this short recording session. That's obviously not acceptable for recording, so you'd definitely need to use another app. I still think that this is a handy and affordable preamp if you only need a single microphone for mobile recording, with decent sound. So, if you get an iRig Pre HD and use Android devices, just keep in mind that you'll probably want a third-party app for recording. Otherwise, just use your device's built-in recorder app.
